Ao longo de vários capítulos John Armstrong disseca a vida e obra de Goethe numa tentativa de encontrar o significado da vida. A respeito de Werther refere:
"It is a portrayal of the condition in which romantic love appears to be the meaning of life: the relationship with this person is the only thing that counts; when it is going well life seems wonderful; but this is a desperately unstable situation. The slightest hint of difficulty takes on the grandest proportions. It is not merely an attachment that is at risk: the meaning of life is in danger. If it is love that gives life meaning any threat to love seems to make life pointless."
